Following the modern custom of thinking in terms of musical scales as a series of notes that ascend in pitch, the Dorian mode is the progenitor of the scales. As we shift to successive intervals, each new sequence of intervals defines a new musical scale/mode until all seven intervals have been used as the starting one, when the cycle of generation ends and the Dorian mode repeats itself in the Hypomixolydian mode.
